EXTRAORDINARY YOUNG WOMEN * ONE RESIDENT SCHOLAR HOUSE *
ONE GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Wellesley ABC
Change the course of a life
Stories
Delali and Yina talk about their freshman year, their college aspirations, and living in the Wellesley ABC house. Delali says, “The girls are all nice here. It’s like a family.” And Yina says, “I always wanted to go to college, especially since my parents didn’t go to college.”
Gina had a dream. Born to a teenage mother in the South Bronx, NY, Gina grew up in the projects, where the buildings were “burn outs.” Gina’s tough grandmother raised her and kept a sharp eye on her education. Gina thrived in Wellesley’s ABC program, taking comfort in the discipline and strong focus on academics. Read how Wellesley ABC gave Gina a better chance, and how she made her dream come true.
D’Andrea talks about tough times, her promising future, and how much Wellesley ABC has changed her life. “I know during college or after I graduate that I need to find a program like Wellesley ABC so I can give a helping hand and give back,” she said. “It’s an all volunteer program … and when you take a step back and look at all that’s being offered, it’s crazy not to take advantage of it.”
Kam, Tara, Ashley, D’Andrea, and Wendy agree that it was really hard at first. Wendy West says, “The academic demands at Wellesley High School are high. To be part of the program, we have to maintain honor roll which means we have to get all A’s and B’s. But nobody will let you fail at ABC. They are here to support you.”
